Yes, of course this has been photoshopped. I still think this should come under photography. I'ts not like I superimposed somone's head and put it on Cameron Diaz's body and called it art. Purple is under-rated, and so is "photomanipulation". Added a layer of black on top, with the color blending mode, then deleted the bits I wanted. Nothing major, but I love the effect.

I still think it belongs in photomanipulation. There is nothing wrong with that term :] I like it though, well, I love it actually :D

Spectacular picture.
The depth of field brings out the flower,
but the decision to keep the color in really enchances the bud.
I particularly love how you kept the color of the fallen...leaves?

i think there should be a 'simple manipulation' category in photography, where the photo is yours but you've just pooped around with it more than usual, like the 'black-and-white-except-for-this-little-bit' stuff (I think it's called selective desaturation, but anyway it's cool and i've used it a few times) and the photo-manipulation should be more for images made from a number of stock images. I know there's darkroom, but it's just not the same

anyway after that mini-rant, the photo is great, the purple is really eyecatching in the way that it's unnatural and natural at the same time :)

A flower growing from a wooden floor. It could be a nice metaphor: nature wins over men's work.
The fact that you colorized the flower adds to this effect.

The focal length is perfect: it makes the flower look sharp and detailed and leaves the rest blurred.
The just-over-the-floor point of view is a nice choice imho, it enhances the perspective.

I suggest you add a black frame to this picture.

Thanks for the great comment! You are right it is a great metaphor isn't it. The flower was strategically placed for the shot, for a similar effect to what you are saying, I appreciate your comments. I'm a bit of an anti border person though. I find that although a border might improve an image, it won't improve my skill. Unless I'm mounting a print, I won't use a border, this way i get critiques on my actual photo, rather than how good my border makes it look. I've seen some really ordinary photos that have been glorified the hell out of, just because it looked good with a border, while the composition of the photo was nothing special. Thats enough of my rant. Thanks again for the comment and FAV!

You're welcome.

I suggested adding a frame because this is a great shot and I think it could look even better with it.
I've always thought that frames are useful companions to pictures, because they lead the observer to focus on the picture, forgetting what's around.
Anyway, your words about frames also make sense.

Keep up the good work!

I do so agree with you. Photoshop is just the modern equivalent of the dark room and when I was in Camera Clubs, no one cried, 'photo manipulation', when I changed my photos in some way. Admittedly, I spent hours in the darkroom, doing what only takes minutes these days.

I have a black & white photo of a butterfly among daisies and I hand coloured the butterfly yellow, about 15 years ago, so the idea of a single colour in a black and white photo is not a new idea; it's just got easier to do.

Do you think it's sour grapes on some of the older generation part or because others can't work out how to do it themselves, or perhaps they have no imagination.

yeah, i do a lot of this technique and im familiar with its origins. Im always trying to add things and make it different. I actually don't think it is solely the older generation of photographers because i know that there are many older photographers embracing newer methods. I feel that in this online comunity it is frowned upon moreso because submissions are so finely categorised and digital manipulations just seem so common and easy to do.
